Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures01:22

Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures

3.2K
Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.
The best practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections include hand hygiene, patient risk...

Area of Science:

  • Transfusion Medicine
  • Blood Banking Technology
  • Biotechnology

Background:

  • The Blood and Tissues Bank of Aragon evaluated the Reveos® Automated Blood Processing System and Mirasol® Pathogen Reduction Technology (PRT) System.
  • A retrospective comparison of routine quality data from two distinct periods was conducted.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the experience of implementing automated blood processing and pathogen reduction technology.
  • To compare the quality of blood components processed using traditional methods versus automated systems with PRT.

Main Methods:

  • Quality data from 6,525 blood components (2007-2012, semi-automated buffy coat) were compared with 6,553 components (2014-2019, Reveos and Mirasol systems).
  • Key quality indicators including discard rates, hemoglobin and hematocrit levels, platelet yields, and factor VIII levels were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • The Reveos system decreased whole blood discard rates (1.2% to 0.1%) and increased hemoglobin and hematocrit in red blood cell concentrates.
  • Platelet concentrate yields remained similar, but preparation methods evolved. Mirasol PRT treatment reduced PC expiry rates to 1.2% and eliminated septic transmissions.
  • Factor VIII levels in plasma were higher with the Reveos system.

Conclusions:

  • Automation via the Reveos system standardized and improved blood processing efficiency.
  • The implementation of Mirasol PRT was facilitated by resources freed through automation.
  • The combined technologies ensured blood supply self-sufficiency and enhanced blood safety, evidenced by zero septic transmissions with PRT-treated components.
