Summary

Background:

Observation:

  • A 15-year-old female presented with a cosmetically disfigured right eye since birth, diagnosed as an anophthalmic socket.
  • Physical examination revealed a lack of ocular tissue, short conjunctival fornices (particularly inferiorly), and decreased orbital volume.

Findings:

  • A dermis fat graft (DFG) from the gluteal region was used to augment orbital volume and was sutured into the anophthalmic socket.
  • A secondary surgery utilizing a mucous membrane graft from the lower lip deepened the inferior fornix.
  • The combined surgical interventions successfully addressed cosmetic and medical concerns, enabling prosthetic eye placement.

Implications:

  • Dermis fat grafts (DFGs) are effective for increasing orbital volume in anophthalmic sockets.
  • Combined grafting techniques, including mucous membrane grafts, can successfully reconstruct shallow fornices.
