Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Innovation
  • Wound Care

Background:

  • Oncological breast surgeries, including breast conserving surgery, oncoplastic surgery, and mastectomies, have a high complication rate (up to 33%).
  • Patients with multiple risk factors are particularly susceptible to surgical site complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the incidence of surgical site complications in high-risk patients undergoing breast cancer surgery.
  • To compare the efficacy of an advanced hydrofiber-hydrocolloid dressing (Aquacel Ag Surgical) versus traditional dressings.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective, case-control study at a single breast unit.
  • Inclusion of 42 patients with three or more risk factors (or two high-risk factors) undergoing breast surgery.
  • Comparison of surgical site complications (skin alterations, infection, wound dehiscence) between advanced and traditional dressing groups.

Main Results:

  • The advanced dressing group showed a statistically significant reduction in wound complications at one week (P=0.015).
  • The advanced dressing was easier to remove by the operator (P=0.026).
  • Improved aesthetic outcomes were reported in the advanced dressing group.

Conclusions:

  • Aquacel Ag Surgical dressing effectively reduces surgical site complications in the first week post-operative for high-risk breast cancer patients.
  • The advanced dressing offers benefits in terms of ease of use and aesthetic results.
