The primary cilium, made up of microtubules, acts as antennae on the cell surfaces for relaying external stimuli into the cells. These fine hair-like structures are present, generally one per cell. Summary

Ectopic cilia (EC) in dogs are successfully treated by surgical removal of the hair follicle. This condition often causes corneal lesions unresponsive to medical therapy and should be suspected in such cases.

  • They can cause significant ocular discomfort and damage in dogs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the clinical data and outcomes of dogs diagnosed with ectopic cilia.
  • To identify common breeds, affected locations, and associated conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 112 dogs diagnosed with ectopic cilia.
  • Data collected from multiple private veterinary practices in France.

Main Results:

  • The most common breeds affected were Shi Tzu, French Bulldog, English Bulldog, and Chihuahua.
  • The upper eyelid was implicated in 93.5% of cases.
