Summary

Statin use did not show a significant association with osteoporosis overall. However, statins were linked to reduced osteoporosis risk in women under 60 but increased risk in women over 60.

Background:

The association between statin use and osteoporosis remains controversial.
Investigating this relationship is crucial for understanding medication impacts on bone health.

Observation:

A large cohort study analyzed 68,592 osteoporosis patients and matched controls aged 40 and above.
Statin use history was compared two years prior to osteoporosis diagnosis using propensity score matching.

Findings:

Overall, increased days of statin use did not correlate with a higher risk of osteoporosis (aOR = 0.97, 95% CI = 0.94-1.00).
Subgroup analysis revealed statins reduced osteoporosis risk in women under 60 but increased it in women 60 and older.
Lipophilic statins were associated with increased osteoporosis risk in women 60+, while hydrophilic statins were not.

Implications:

Statin's effect on osteoporosis risk differs significantly based on age and sex.
Further research is needed to clarify the mechanisms behind age- and sex-specific associations.
These findings may inform personalized medication strategies for osteoporosis prevention.
