Background:

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by social communication deficits and restricted, repetitive behaviors.
Feeding and eating difficulties are commonly observed in children with ASD, impacting their nutritional status and family dynamics.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the feeding and eating behaviors in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
To identify specific challenges related to mealtimes and food preferences in this population.

Main Methods:

A study group of 41 high-functioning children with ASD was compared to a control group of 34 neurotypical children.
Nutritional status and feeding behaviors were assessed using a questionnaire.

Main Results:

Children with ASD demonstrated significantly more frequent fussiness during mealtimes, requiring entertainment, and being fed by parents away from the table.
Marked disadvantages were observed in the Study Group regarding utensil use and pronounced food selectivity.

Conclusions:

Food selectivity is a significantly prevalent issue among children with ASD.
Feeding and eating problems in ASD require broader consideration and a collaborative approach involving multidisciplinary teams and parents.
