A new nutritional screening tool for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) surgery patients accurately identifies malnutrition. This tool, NS-IBD, shows higher sensitivity compared to existing methods for detecting malnutrition in IBD surgical candidates.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Surgical Nutrition
- Clinical Assessment
Background:
- Malnutrition identification and preoperative nutritional care are critical for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) surgery.
- No validated nutritional screening tool currently exists for IBD patients.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate a novel nutritional screening tool specifically for IBD patients undergoing surgery.
- To compare the performance of the new tool against existing nutritional screening methods.
Main Methods:
- Developed the IBD Nutritional Screening tool (NS-IBD).
- Included 62 consecutive patients scheduled for elective surgery.
- Compared NS-IBD with NRS-2002, MUST, MST, MIRT, and SaskIBD-NR, relating all to GLIM criteria.
Main Results:
- 40% of IBD patients (25/62) were malnourished according to GLIM criteria (15 Crohn's disease, 10 Ulcerative Colitis).
- The NS-IBD tool demonstrated the highest sensitivity (0.92) in detecting malnutrition compared to other tools when assessed against GLIM criteria.
Conclusions:
- Existing nutritional screening tools exhibit low sensitivity for diagnosing malnutrition in IBD patients based on current GLIM criteria.
- The developed NS-IBD tool is superior in identifying IBD surgical patients who may require nutritional assessment and preoperative intervention.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease II: Crohn's Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease, commonly known as IBD, refers to a collection of disorders that lead to persistent inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two types of IBD are ulcerative colitis, which impacts the colon, and Crohn's disease, which can involve any part of the gastrointestinal segment.
