Background:

  • Decision regret (DR) is a key patient-centered outcome after therapeutic interventions.
  • Understanding DR after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure DR following primary THA and TKA.
  • To compare DR between THA and TKA patients.
  • To identify factors contributing to DR.

Main Methods:

  • The DR scale measured decision regret in THA and TKA patients.
  • Data collected from patients who underwent surgery within the previous year (Feb 2017-Dec 2018).

Main Results:

  • Knee replacement patients had significantly higher moderate/severe DR (17.1%) than hip replacement patients (4.8%).
  • Poorer post-operative pain and function improvements (Oxford score) were linked to greater DR.
  • Joint replacement type (TKA vs. THA) predicted DR, with TKA patients over twice as likely to experience moderate/severe DR.

Conclusions:

  • Knee replacement patients experience significantly more decision regret than hip replacement patients one year post-surgery.
  • For both THA and TKA, poorer Oxford scores correlate with increased DR.
  • Investigating decision aids may help reduce post-operative DR, particularly for knee replacement patients.
