1Dental Association of Malta, Gzira, Malta.
A pilot study in Malta demonstrated that a new continuing professional development (CPD) program significantly improved dental professionals' short-term knowledge retention. The findings support developing a structured dental CPD framework in Malta.
Area of Science:
- Dental Education
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Background:
- Continuing professional development (CPD) is voluntary in nine European countries, with a trend towards mandatory programs for harmonization.
- The effectiveness of dental CPD is debated, with limited literature available.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate a new dental CPD program's effectiveness and success in Malta.
- To develop a strategy, guidelines, and recommendations for establishing a dental CPD program in Malta.
Main Methods:
- Phase 1: Survey analysis of 135 members of the Dental Association of Malta (78% response rate).
- Phase 2: Evaluation of eight verifiable CPD events using pre- and post-event tests and feedback forms.
Main Results:
- All evaluated CPD events showed a statistically significant improvement in short-term knowledge retention (p < 0.05).
- Participant satisfaction levels ranged widely from 70% to 99% across the events.
Conclusions:
- The project provided data for guidelines and recommendations for Malta's regulatory body and CPD providers.
- This study informs the establishment of a dental CPD framework in Malta, where it is currently voluntary.
