This study found no link between local alcohol availability and chlamydia rates in young Australians. However, inconsistent condom use was significantly associated with higher chlamydia prevalence.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
- Sexual Health
Background:
- Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) prevalence is potentially linked to alcohol availability.
- This study examines the relationship between alcohol availability in local areas and chlamydia rates among young Australians.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between alcohol availability at the postcode level and chlamydia prevalence in young Australians (16-29 years).
- To examine the association between condom use and chlamydia prevalence, adjusting for alcohol availability.
Main Methods:
- Alcohol availability data were sourced from liquor licensing records at the postcode level.
- Participant data (postcode, sexual behavior, chlamydia test results) were collected via a survey of young Australians in rural/regional areas.
- Mixed-effects logistic regression models were employed to analyze associations.
Main Results:
- Little evidence was found to support an association between local alcohol availability and chlamydia prevalence.
- Significant associations were observed between inconsistent condom use and chlamydia prevalence, even after adjusting for alcohol availability (AOR 2.19-2.20).
Conclusions:
- No significant association was found between alcohol availability and chlamydia at the postcode level in young Australians.
- Inconsistent condom use is a significant risk factor for chlamydia.
- Further research is needed to define 'local area' measures and their impact on sexual health outcomes.
