Summary

Fast-velocity resistance training significantly improved early rate of force development and mobility in individuals with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). This 10-week intervention also enhanced self-perceived quality of life in the MS population.

Background:

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease impacting mobility and quality of life.
  • Impaired rate of force development (RFD) is a common issue in MS patients.
  • Effective interventions to improve functional capacity in MS are needed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of lower-limb fast-velocity concentric resistance training on RFD, mobility, and quality of life in people with MS.
  • To compare outcomes between an experimental group undergoing training and a control group.

Main Methods:

  • A 10-week randomized controlled trial involving 30 participants with MS.
  • Experimental group performed fast-velocity concentric resistance training; control group received no intervention.
  • Evaluations included knee extension RFD, Sit-to-Stand test, Timed Up and Go test, and quality of life questionnaire.

Main Results:

  • The experimental group showed significant improvements in early RFD (Right leg: 63.9%, Left leg: 52.7%) compared to the control group.

Conclusions:
