Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the prevalence of coronavirus vaccine hesitancy among Africans.
  • To identify key determinants influencing vaccine hesitancy in the African population.

Main Methods:

  • An online, cross-sectional, African-wide survey was conducted in English, Arabic, and French.
  • Data collected included demographics, health status, vaccine literacy, perceptions, past experiences, and willingness to receive the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine.
  • Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze data from 5,416 participants.

Main Results:

  • Only 63% of participants were willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine promptly, with 79% expressing concern over side effects.
  • Perceived high risk of infection (OR=0.28) and severe illness (OR=0.21) were associated with lower hesitancy, while prior vaccine refusal increased hesitancy (OR=2.72).
  • Participants desired mandatory (40%), free (78%), and conveniently accessible (44%) vaccine distribution.

Conclusions:

  • Substantial COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy exists among Africans.
  • Perceived personal risk of infection and previous vaccine refusal are significant predictors of hesitancy.
  • Addressing concerns and ensuring accessibility are crucial for effective vaccine rollout in Africa.
