Physical-mental health comorbidity (PMHC) affects nearly 7% of Estonians, with anxiety and depression being common. Integrated care models are recommended to address this significant health burden.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
- Health Services Research
Background:
- Multimorbidity is linked to physical-mental health comorbidity (PMHC), but its scope in Eastern Europe is unclear.
- Understanding PMHC is crucial for addressing the complex health needs of populations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the prevalence and characteristics of physical-mental health comorbidity (PMHC) in the Estonian population.
- To investigate the association between physical conditions and mental health disorders (MHD).
Main Methods:
- Population-based cross-sectional study using health claims data from the Estonian Health Insurance Fund (EHIF).
- Analysis of 55 chronic conditions in over 1.2 million individuals, assessing 3-year period-prevalence of physical and mental disorders.
- Examination of associations by age and sex.
Main Results:
- Nearly half of individuals had at least one chronic condition; 8.1% had mental health disorders (MHD).
- Physical-mental health comorbidity (PMHC) was present in 6.2% of the population, with anxiety and depression being dominant MHDs.
- MHD prevalence positively correlated with the number of physical disorders; specific patterns observed for different MHDs with increasing physical comorbidities.
Conclusions:
- The burden of physical-mental comorbidity in Estonia is substantial.
- Further research needed on disorder clusters and interactions.
- Integrated care models are recommended to improve health care delivery and reduce barriers to mental health care.
