Colonoscopy after Golytely preparation in acute rectal bleeding.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

• To evaluate the safety and efficacy of urgent colonoscopy with Golytely purgation for diagnosing acute colonic hemorrhage.
• To assess the potential for early endoscopic intervention.

Main Methods:

• Thirty-five patients with acute hematochezia underwent urgent colonoscopy after Golytely preparation.
• Mucosal visualization and identification of bleeding sources were assessed.
• Therapeutic endoscopic electrocautery was used when indicated.

Main Results:

• Excellent mucosal visualization was achieved in all patients.
• Colonic bleeding lesions were identified in 24 of 35 patients.
• Hemorrhage proximal to the ileocecal valve occurred in 3 patients.

• Urgent colonoscopy following Golytely purgation is a safe and sensitive diagnostic procedure for acute colonic hemorrhage.

• The preparation and procedure were well-tolerated with no complications.
