This study reports the first case of Aspergillus fumigatus rhinopharyngitis in a Chilean horse. Treatment with oral itraconazole successfully resolved the fungal infection and clinical signs.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Mycology
- Equine Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Fungal infections in horses can affect the respiratory system.
- Aspergillus fumigatus is a common mold with potential pathogenic capabilities.
Observation:
- A purebred Chilean horse presented with mucopurulent nasal discharge, inflamed nasal, ocular, and ear mucosa, decay, and reduced appetite.
- Clinical signs indicated a significant upper respiratory tract issue.
Findings:
- Diagnosis of Aspergillus fumigatus rhinopharyngitis was confirmed through mycological and molecular analysis of transtracheal aspirate samples.
- Antifungal susceptibility testing guided treatment selection.
Implications:
- This case highlights the importance of considering Aspergillus fumigatus in equine respiratory disease.
- Effective treatment protocols, such as itraconazole, can be established for this condition.
