Immunologic parameters in patients with thyroid cancer.

K Makimoto, M Ohmura, T Hoshino

    Summary

Thyroid cancer patients showed altered T-cell levels. Immunotherapy with OK-432 appeared to help some patients without recurrence by boosting T-cells and lymphocyte counts.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Oncology
    • Endocrinology

    Background:

    • Thyroid carcinomas, particularly papillary and follicular types, can impact immune function.
    • Understanding immunologic parameters in these patients is crucial for treatment strategies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate immunologic parameters in patients with thyroid papillary and follicular carcinomas.
    • To assess the effect of OK-432 immunotherapy on immune responses in postoperative patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Examination of peripheral blood lymphocytes and skin reactions to antigens (phytohemagglutinin, purified protein derivative).
    • Analysis of T-cell subsets, including IgG X Fc+ T-cells (T gamma).
    • Administration of OK-432 immunotherapy in postoperative patients.

    Main Results:

    • Preoperative patients showed normal peripheral blood tests except for elevated T gamma cells.
    • Skin reactions were diminished postoperatively.
    • Patients without recurrence had reduced T-cells and lymphocytes, which OK-432 appeared to augment.
    • Patients with recurrence showed significant reductions in T-cells and lymphocytes, with limited response to OK-432.

    Conclusions:

    • Thyroid carcinoma affects T-cell populations and skin-test reactivity.
    • OK-432 immunotherapy shows potential in augmenting immune parameters in non-recurrent cases.
    • Immunotherapy efficacy is limited in patients with tumor recurrence.
