Facial biometry offers an objective method to assess facelift surgery outcomes. This study found that facelift surgery significantly reduces apparent age as determined by facial recognition software.

Background:

  • Cosmetic surgery is increasingly popular, prompting research into its effects on facial recognition.
  • Nonlinear modifications to facial landmarks after surgery can challenge biometric systems.
  • Facial biometry presents an objective approach to quantify cosmetic surgery results.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose and validate facial biometry as a method for objectively assessing changes after facelift surgery.
  • To evaluate the impact of facelift surgery on apparent age estimation by facial recognition software.

Main Methods:

  • 37 women aged 50-80 who underwent facelift surgery between 2013-2017 were studied.
  • Seven direct facial measurements (4 linear, 3 angular) were taken pre- and post-surgery.
  • Facial recognition software was used to estimate apparent age.

Main Results:

  • Postoperative apparent age was significantly lower than preoperative apparent age (P < 10^-3).
  • Facial recognition software showed no significant difference in real vs. preoperative apparent age (P = 0.188).
  • Statistically significant changes were observed in linear and angular facial measurements post-surgery.

Conclusions:

  • Facial biometry effectively evaluates pre- and post-facelift facial features.
  • The study objectively determined that facelift surgery improves estimated age.
  • Biometric analysis provides a quantifiable outcome measure for cosmetic procedures.
