    Summary

    This study found no significant differences in T lymphocyte subsets or Ia-positive cells in patients with psoriasis compared to healthy individuals. Mononuclear cell counts in psoriasis patients generally fell within normal reference ranges.

    Background:

    • Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease.
    • Immune cell dysregulation is implicated in psoriasis pathogenesis.
    • Specific T lymphocyte subsets and Ia-positive cells are key players in immune responses.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the percentages of T lymphocyte subsets and Ia-positive cells in mononuclear blood cells of psoriasis patients.
    • To compare these cell populations in psoriasis patients with those of healthy controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Mononuclear blood cells from 19 psoriasis patients were isolated.
    • Cells were stained using monoclonal antibodies for total T lymphocytes, helper/inducer T cells, suppressor/cytotoxic T cells, and Ia-positive lymphocytes/monocytes.
    • Cell flow cytometry was used for enumeration of fluorescence-positive cells.

    Main Results:

    • Percentages of all measured mononuclear cell types were within the reference range for most psoriasis patients.
    • Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences between psoriasis patients and 100 healthy subjects.
    • No significant alterations were observed in T lymphocyte subsets or Ia-positive cells in this cohort.

    Conclusions:

    • The study did not find significant alterations in T lymphocyte subsets or Ia-positive cells in the peripheral blood of psoriasis patients.
    • These findings suggest that peripheral blood immune cell profiles, as measured, may not be significantly different in psoriasis patients compared to healthy individuals.
