Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare physical activity levels in children with and without clubfoot relapse.
  • To assess the impact of clubfoot relapse on daily activity patterns in children aged 5-10 years.

Main Methods:

  • Observational, prospective cohort study (Clubfoot Activity and Recurrence Exercise study - CARES) of 30 children (5-10 years old) with idiopathic clubfoot.
  • Participants wore wrist-worn Fitbits for 14 days to monitor daily activity.
  • Demographic surveys, Child Health Questionnaire (CHQ), and clubfoot disease-specific instrument (CDSI) were administered.

Main Results:

  • Children with and without clubfoot relapse exhibited similar daily step counts, distance walked, and step intensities, with a notable exception of higher moderate activity in the relapse group.
  • Higher socioeconomic status (family income >$100,000) correlated with increased total steps, distance, and activity intensity.
  • Demographics, CDSI, and CHQ scores did not significantly differ between groups; step counts were comparable to healthy children.

Conclusions:

  • Children treated for clubfoot relapse using the Ponseti method demonstrate comparable physical activity levels to those without relapse.
  • Step counts in children with clubfoot relapse align with those of the general pediatric population.
  • Findings provide reassurance to parents regarding their child's physical activity post-clubfoot relapse treatment.
