Summary

Cattle with nonpathological phalangeal fractures have a good prognosis for recovery. Treatment involving hoof blocks on adjacent digits, with or without casts, aids return to function.

  • Nonpathological phalangeal fractures are uncommon injuries in cattle.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe clinical findings and outcomes in cattle diagnosed with nonpathological phalangeal fractures.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of different treatment modalities.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of medical records from a teaching hospital (May 2004-May 2020) was conducted.
  • Data included signalment, history, clinical and imaging findings, treatment, and survival to discharge.
  • Long-term outcomes were assessed via owner telephone communication.

Main Results:

  • Seventeen cattle (9 bulls, 8 heifers/cows) with phalangeal fractures were evaluated.
  • Most fractures involved the distal phalanx; bucking stock were overrepresented.
  • Sixteen animals survived to discharge; 9 of 12 with follow-up returned to functional use.

Conclusions:

  • Nonpathological phalangeal fractures in cattle appear to have a favorable prognosis.
  • Treatment with hoof blocks on the unaffected adjacent digit, potentially combined with distal limb casts, supports return to function.
