    Summary

Nutcracker esophagus, a rare esophageal motor disorder, is diagnosed manometrically. Radiographic findings in patients with chest pain or dysphagia are typically normal or nonspecific, confirming the manometric diagnosis.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Esophageal Motility Disorders

    Background:

    • Nutcracker esophagus is a recently identified esophageal motor disorder.
    • It presents clinically with chest pain and/or dysphagia.
    • Manometric findings include normal primary peristalsis and high-amplitude distal contractions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To correlate radiographic and manometric findings in patients diagnosed with nutcracker esophagus.
    • To determine the diagnostic utility of radiographic examinations in nutcracker esophagus.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 20 patients with nutcracker esophagus.
    • Correlation of manometric data with radiographic examinations.
    • Assessment of esophageal wall thickness and peristaltic activity.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Normal primary peristalsis was observed radiographically in 16 out of 20 patients.
    • Four patients showed nonspecific motor disorders on radiography.
    • Nonspecific tertiary activity was noted in approximately half of the patients.
    • Esophageal wall thickness remained within normal limits.

    Conclusions:

    • Nutcracker esophagus is primarily a manometric diagnosis.
    • Radiographic findings in nutcracker esophagus are generally normal or nonspecific.
    • Clinical correlation with manometric data is crucial for diagnosis.
