    Summary

    Nailfold capillary microscopy in women with connective tissue diseases revealed overlapping findings between patients and healthy controls. While some systemic lupus erythematosus and scleroderma patients showed abnormal capillary dilation, no clear relation to clinical features was identified.

    Background:

    • Nailfold capillaroscopy is a non-invasive technique to visualize microvascular changes.
    • Alterations in nailfold capillaries are observed in various autoimmune and connective tissue diseases.
    • Quantifying these changes can aid in understanding disease pathophysiology.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate nailfold capillary morphology in women with connective tissue diseases (CTD).
    • To compare capillary parameters between CTD subtypes and healthy controls.
    • To assess the relationship between capillary morphology and autoantibody status.

    Main Methods:

    • Photomicrographs of nailfold capillary loops were analyzed in 18 healthy women and 42 women with CTD (rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma).

    Conclusions:

    • Nailfold capillaroscopy shows significant overlap in findings between healthy individuals and patients with rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and scleroderma.
    • While some patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and scleroderma exhibit capillary abnormalities, these do not consistently correlate with autoantibody status or clinical features.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the specific role of microvascular changes in the pathogenesis of connective tissue diseases.
