    Summary

    Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) patients showed normal platelet function but elevated clotting factors, suggesting a subset at higher risk for thromboembolism. Further research is needed to identify these patients.

    Background:

    • Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a common cardiac condition.
    • Previous cerebrovascular disorders (CVD) may be associated with MVP.
    • Platelet function and coagulation status in MVP patients require further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate platelet function and coagulation parameters in patients with MVP.
    • To identify potential markers for thromboembolic risk in MVP.

    Main Methods:

    • Studied 28 consecutive MVP patients, including 7 with prior CVD.
    • Assessed platelet aggregation rate (PAR), factor VIII von Willebrand factor antigen (VIII vWF:Ag), and fibrinopeptide A (FPA).

    Main Results:

    • Platelet function tests were largely normal, except for PAR.
