    Summary

    Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABS) patients often resume sexual activity (SA) after recovery, but frequency may decrease. Comprehensive sexual counseling post-CABS is crucial but inadequately addressed.

    Background:

    • Successful rehabilitation for coronary artery bypass surgery (CABS) patients necessitates addressing sexuality.
    • Limited data exists on the sexual activity (SA) of patients following CABS.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of CABS on patient sexuality.
    • To examine the relationship between SA and work status post-surgery.
    • To identify factors influencing the resumption and quality of SA after CABS.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 134 CABS patients was interviewed regarding their sexual experiences.
    • Data collected included pre- and post-surgery sexual activity, satisfaction, fears, and symptoms.
    • Statistical analysis was used to determine significant factors affecting SA.

    Main Results:

    • 84 of 92 previously sexually active patients resumed SA, with an average resumption time of 7.8 weeks.
    • Pre-surgery sexual dissatisfaction negatively impacted resumption (p<.05), while returning to work positively influenced it (p<.05).
    • 39% decreased SA frequency; 17% of patients and 35% of partners feared resuming SA; 23% experienced intercourse symptoms. Couples with closer emotional bonds resumed SA more frequently (p<.02).

    Conclusions:

    • While CABS patients generally fare better sexually than myocardial infarction patients, CABS does not yield a net gain in SA or sexual functioning.
    • Physicians inadequately initiate discussions about sexual health, with only 20% discussing it directly with patients.
    • There is a clear need for comprehensive sexual counseling as part of CABS patient rehabilitation.
