Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms-SNPs01:05

Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms-SNPs

16.7K
A single nucleotide polymorphism or SNP is a single nucleotide variation at a specific genomic position in a large population. It is the most prevalent type of sequence variation found in the human genome. Point mutations that occur in more than 1% of the population qualify as SNPs. These are present once every 1000 nucleotides on an average in the human genome. Replacement of a purine with another purine (A/G) or a pyrimidine with another pyrimidine (C/T) is known as a transition. In contrast,...

T Cell Types and Functions

1.5K
When T cells with CD4 markers are activated, they give rise to two types of effector cells: helper T cells and regulatory T cells. Meanwhile, T cells with CD8 markers differentiate into effector cytotoxic T cells. The differentiation of CD4 T cells into helper T cell subsets, such as Th1, Th2, and Th17 cells, is dependent on the antigen type, antigen-presenting cell, and regulatory cytokines.
Th1 cells stimulate dendritic cells to express necessary co-stimulatory molecules on their surfaces for...

Summary

Interleukin-8 (IL-8) gene polymorphisms are linked to a higher risk of developing periodontal diseases. This systematic review confirms the association between IL-8 variations and periodontitis development.

Area of Science:

  • Immunogenetics
  • Periodontology
  • Oral inflammatory diseases

Background:

  • Interleukin-8 (IL-8) is a key cytokine in inflammatory responses.
  • IL-8 and its genetic variations (polymorphisms) are implicated in various inflammatory conditions.
  • Periodontal diseases, such as periodontitis, involve significant inflammation affecting tooth-supporting structures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and synthesize evidence on the association between IL-8 gene polymorphisms and periodontitis.
  • To analyze studies published between 2006 and 2021 to assess the current understanding of this relationship.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature review adhering to PRISMA guidelines.
  • Searches conducted in PubMed (MEDLINE), ScienceDirect, and Wiley Online Library databases.
  • PICO framework used to define the research question: Are IL-8 gene polymorphisms associated with periodontitis?
  • Inclusion criteria focused on studies from 2006-2021; 31 studies were ultimately included after rigorous screening.

Main Results:

  • The systematic analysis identified a significant association between IL-8 gene polymorphisms and periodontitis.
  • Evidence suggests these genetic variations contribute to an increased susceptibility or risk for developing periodontal diseases.

Conclusions:

  • IL-8 and its polymorphisms are demonstrably linked to an elevated risk of periodontal diseases.
  • The findings underscore the role of IL-8 genetics in the pathogenesis of periodontitis.
