Background:

Postoperative hypoparathyroidism is a frequent complication following total thyroidectomy.
The reported incidence of hypoparathyroidism after total thyroidectomy shows significant variability in existing literature, ranging from 7% to 37%.
The precise impact of this complication on patient health remains difficult to quantify accurately.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy of the novel Tissue Dissection with Solution Injection (TDSI) technique in reducing the incidence of postoperative hypoparathyroidism.
To compare the outcomes of total thyroidectomy using TDSI with conventional methods.

A retrospective review of 78 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy utilizing the TDSI technique (TDSI group) between December 2018 and August 2019.

Comparison with a control group of 78 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy without the TDSI technique (non-TDSI group) from January 2018 to September 2018.

All procedures were performed by a single surgeon, with a mean thyroidectomy duration of one hour.

Main Results:

The TDSI technique demonstrated a reduction in the incidence of postoperative hypoparathyroidism compared to the non-TDSI group.
The study highlights the effectiveness of saline injection during tissue dissection in mitigating this complication.

Conclusions:
