    Summary

Total gastrectomy is a viable last resort for severe gastric bleeding when other methods fail. This surgery provided good outcomes for patients with life-threatening, non-variceal stomach hemorrhage.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Surgical Oncology

    Background:

    • Massive gastric hemorrhage can be challenging to diagnose, even with advanced imaging like endoscopy and angiography.
    • Non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding necessitates effective interventions when conservative measures are insufficient.

    Observation:

    • Six patients with persistent, massive gastric bleeding, unresponsive to initial diagnostics, underwent total gastrectomy.
    • Diagnoses included submucosal arteriovenous malformations, erosive gastritis, and an ulcer at the gastroesophageal junction.

    Findings:

    • Total gastrectomy was required for life-threatening gastric hemorrhage when the source remained unidentified.
    • Post-surgical outcomes were favorable, with no recurrence of bleeding in surviving patients.

    Implications:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • Total gastrectomy serves as a critical, albeit last-resort, surgical option for intractable gastric bleeding.
    • This procedure can lead to good functional recovery and prevent rebleeding in select patient populations.
