Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Health Informatics
  • Patient-Centered Care

Background:

  • Men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer face complex treatment choices.
  • Patient decision-making tools like consultation recordings are underutilized.
  • Mobile applications offer potential for increased access to these tools.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility and acceptability of a mobile application for recording oncology visits.
  • To evaluate the impact of consultation recordings and summaries on patient decision-making.
  • To explore implementation factors in a clinical setting.

Main Methods:

  • A mixed-methods pilot study involving 20 men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.
  • Patients used a mobile app to record oncology visits and optionally receive summaries.
  • Feasibility and acceptability were measured via surveys; decision-making impact assessed using the Decisional Conflict Scale and interviews.

Main Results:

  • 90% of patients recorded their visits, and 78% received a summary; 90% of visits were via telehealth.
  • 78% of patients found the app easy to use, and 50% reported the recording aided treatment decisions.
  • Decisional conflict significantly decreased (47.4 to 28.5, P < .001); interviews identified facilitators and barriers.

Conclusions:

  • A mobile application for recording consultations is a feasible, acceptable, and valuable tool for improving patient decision-making in telehealth settings.
  • The intervention showed potential to reduce decisional conflict among patients with advanced prostate cancer.
  • Further research in diverse populations is warranted.
