Summary

Cyanoacrylate glue and Nylon sutures both effectively promote bone healing after tooth extraction. While cyanoacrylate showed a slight initial delay, both methods resulted in comparable bone neoformation by 30 days.

Area of Science:

  • Oral surgery
  • Biomaterials science
  • Regenerative medicine

Background:

  • Alveolar socket management after tooth extraction is crucial for healing.
  • Sutures are a traditional method for wound closure.
  • Biological glues offer an alternative for socket repair.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of 2-ethyl-cyanoacrylate glue versus Nylon 5-0 sutures for alveolar socket repair.
  • To evaluate bone neoformation following tooth extraction using these two closure methods.

Main Methods:

  • Tooth extraction and subsequent socket closure in Wistar rats.
  • Application of 2-ethyl-cyanoacrylate glue on one side and Nylon 5-0 sutures on the contralateral side.
  • Histomorphometric analysis of bone neoformation at 3, 7, 15, and 30 days post-extraction.

Main Results:

  • Initial delay in bone neoformation observed with cyanoacrylate at day 7.
  • Gradual decrease in the difference of bone neoformation between groups from day 15 onwards.
  • No significant difference in bone neoformation between cyanoacrylate and suture groups at day 30 (p=0.902).

Conclusions:

  • 2-ethyl-cyanoacrylate closure facilitates complete bone neoformation after tooth extraction.
  • Cyanoacrylate is a viable alternative to Nylon sutures for alveolar socket repair, showing comparable long-term results.
