    Summary

    This study found that shipyard workers' own estimates of asbestos exposure correlated better with pleural plaques than expert estimates. Smoking habits showed no association with pleural plaque occurrence in this group.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between pleural plaques and asbestos exposure in male shipyard workers.
    • To compare the accuracy of self-estimated asbestos exposure versus expert-estimated exposure.
    • To examine the relationship between smoking and pleural plaques in this cohort.
