    Area of Science:

    • Pulmonary Medicine
    • Toxicology
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) is an opportunistic infection.
    • Chronic alveolitis can result from prolonged environmental exposures.
    • Gum arabic is a common ingredient in food products.

    Observation:

    • A patient presented with symptoms suggestive of Pneumocystis pneumonia.
    • Further investigation revealed chronic alveolitis.
    • The alveolitis was attributed to repeated inhalation of gum arabic found in sweets.

    Findings:

    • Diagnosis of Pneumocystis pneumonia was confirmed.
    • Trans-bronchial biopsy and alveolar lavage analysis identified gum arabic as the causative agent.
    • Cessation of gum arabic inhalation led to clinical improvement.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights a novel cause of drug-induced lung disease.
    • Environmental and occupational exposures should be considered in unexplained pulmonary conditions.
    • Awareness of potential allergens in consumer products is crucial for respiratory health.
