Depressive Disorders: Etiology

181
Depressive disorders result from a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors, each contributing uniquely to the development and persistence of the condition. Understanding these factors provides critical insight into the multifaceted nature of depression.
Biological Factors in Depression
Biological predispositions significantly influence the risk of developing depressive disorders. Genetic studies highlight the role of variations in the serotonin transporter...

Depressive disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by pervasive feelings of sadness, diminished pleasure in life, and a significant impact on daily functioning. These conditions are most prevalent in individuals during their 30s and affect women at twice the rate of men. Contrary to popular belief, younger individuals are generally more susceptible to these disorders than older adults. Two key types of depressive disorders include Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and...

Stereotype Threat and Self-fulfilling Prophecies

39.7K
When we hold a stereotype about a person, we have expectations that he or she will fulfill that stereotype. A self-fulfilling prophecy is an expectation held by a person that alters his or her behavior in a way that tends to make it true. When we hold stereotypes about a person, we tend to treat the person according to our expectations. This treatment can influence the person to act according to our stereotypic expectations, thus confirming our stereotypic beliefs. Research by Rosenthal and...

Socioemotional Experience and Gender Development

102
Social-emotional experiences and cultural influences play significant roles in shaping gender development. During middle childhood, from ages 6 to 11, peer groups become dominant in reinforcing gender norms. Children in this age group often align with same-gender peer groups, which actively encourage behaviors that conform to traditional gender roles. For instance, boys may be discouraged from engaging in activities perceived as feminine, reinforcing culturally dictated norms about masculinity...

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry and Mental Health
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Depression is a leading cause of disability in adults.
  • Childhood neglect and lack of parental attachment are linked to depression.
  • Parental love as a factor in adolescent mental health is understudied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the association between feeling unloved during adolescence and lifetime depression.
  • To examine gender differences in this association.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from 5114 participants (aged 24-32) from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health).
  • Employed logistic regression to assess the link between perceived parental unlovingness before age 18 and lifetime depression.
  • Stratified analyses by gender.

Main Results:

  • 16.2% of participants reported a lifetime depression diagnosis.
  • Feeling "often" not wanted/loved was associated with 3x higher odds of depression (AOR=3.00).
  • Feeling "sometimes" not wanted/loved was associated with 1.59x higher odds of depression (AOR=1.59).
  • The association between feeling unloved and depression was significant for both men (AOR=3.70) and women (AOR=2.73).

Conclusions:

  • Experiencing a lack of parental love during adolescence has significant implications for developing lifetime depression in both genders.
  • Further research is needed to explore this construct and develop family-based interventions.
  • Strengthening parent-child relationships is crucial for preventing adolescent depression.
