    Patients with inflammatory bowel disease, particularly Crohn's disease, show enhanced production of lymphocyte-activating factor (LAF) in vitro. This may indicate a cellular defect or monocyte activation in Crohn's disease, impacting inflammatory bowel disease progression.

    Background:

    • Interleukin 1 (IL-1) plays a role in chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
    • Lymphocyte-activating factor (LAF) is a mediator with activities relevant to IBD.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To measure LAF activity in plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from IBD patients.
    • To correlate LAF production with disease activity, treatment, and other biomarkers.

    Main Methods:

    • Mouse thymocyte stimulation assay used to quantify LAF activity.
    • Plasma samples and PBMC supernatants analyzed from Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and healthy subjects.
    • Comparison with disease activity, drug therapy, granulocyte count, plasma zinc, and C-reactive protein (CRP).
