Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Spindle cell tumors are rare neoplasms.
  • Retroperitoneal tumors present diagnostic challenges due to their location.

Observation:

  • A 52-year-old female presented with persistent right upper quadrant abdominal pain.
  • Imaging revealed an 11 cm retroperitoneal soft tissue mass.
  • The mass was surgically excised and diagnosed as a spindle cell tumor.

Findings:

  • Histopathological diagnosis confirmed a spindle cell tumor.
  • Complete tumor removal was achieved.
  • Partially invaded lesions were also addressed during surgery.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the importance of recognizing and understanding rare retroperitoneal spindle cell tumors.
