    Summary

    Immediate postpartum insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD) did not affect postpartum bleeding or hemoglobin levels in healthy women. This study found no significant differences between the IUD group and the control group regarding blood loss or anemia indicators.

    Background:

    • Postpartum hemorrhage remains a significant concern in maternal health.
    • Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are a common form of contraception.
    • The safety and efficacy of immediate postpartum IUD insertion require ongoing investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the impact of immediate postpartum insertion of a Copper T 220C IUD on postpartum bleeding.
    • To assess changes in hemoglobin levels following immediate postpartum IUD insertion.
    • To determine if immediate postpartum IUD placement alters the normal characteristics of the postpartum period.

    • A randomized controlled study involving 66 healthy women after normal term pregnancy and delivery.

    • Hemoglobin levels at 72 hours postpartum were similar between groups (11.9 ± 0.28 gm/ml for IUD group vs. 12.2 ± 0.36 gm/ml for control group).
    • No adverse changes in the normal postpartum period characteristics were observed in women with immediate IUD insertion.

    Conclusions:

    • Immediate postpartum insertion of a Copper T 220C IUD is safe and does not increase postpartum bleeding.
    • This method of IUD insertion does not negatively impact maternal hemoglobin levels.
    • Immediate postpartum IUD placement is a viable option without altering the typical postpartum recovery course.
