Elevated serum levels of C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10 (CXCL10) and CXCL12 are linked to vitiligo pathogenesis. Higher CXCL10 levels correlate with active vitiligo, suggesting their role in disease progression.
Area of Science:
- Immunodermatology
- Autoimmune diseases
- Chemokine signaling
Background:
- Vitiligo affects 0.5-1% of the global population, causing skin depigmentation and psychological distress.
- Chemokines C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 9 (CXCL9), CXCL10, CXCL11, and CXCL12 are implicated in Th1-mediated autoimmune responses.
- These chemokines may drive T-cell mediated melanocyte destruction in vitiligo.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the role of CXCL10 and CXCL12 in vitiligo pathogenesis.
- To determine the relationship between CXCL10 and CXCL12 levels and vitiligo disease activity.
Main Methods:
- Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure serum CXCL10 and CXCL12 levels.
- Study included 40 non-segmental vitiligo (NSV) patients (20 active, 20 stable) and 20 healthy controls.
- Patients and controls were age- and sex-matched.
Main Results:
- Serum CXCL10 levels were significantly higher in vitiligo patients compared to controls.
- A statistically significant difference in serum CXCL10 levels was observed between active and stable vitiligo patients, with higher levels in active cases.
- Serum CXCL12 levels were also noted to be increased in vitiligo patients.
Conclusions:
- Increased serum levels of CXCL10 and CXCL12 are associated with vitiligo.
- CXCL10 and CXCL12 show a positive correlation with disease activity in vitiligo.
- These findings suggest a significant role for CXCL10 and CXCL12 in the pathogenesis of vitiligo.
