Squamous Cell Carcinoma Antigen in Psoriasis: An Immunohistochemical Study

Squamous cell carcinoma antigen 2 (SCCA2) is elevated in psoriasis patients and correlates with disease severity and skin inflammation. This suggests SCCA2 may serve as a valuable biomarker for psoriasis.

- Squamous cell carcinoma antigens (SCCA1, SCCA2) are serpin family members known as squamous cell carcinoma biomarkers.
- Previous research indicates SCCA involvement in immunological conditions like asthma and atopic dermatitis.

- To evaluate SCCA2 expression in the skin of patients with chronic plaque psoriasis.
- To determine the correlation between SCCA2 expression, psoriasis clinical severity, and inflammatory infiltrate density in skin lesions.

- Skin biopsies were obtained from 24 psoriasis vulgaris patients and 24 healthy controls.
- Hematoxylin and eosin staining assessed inflammation grade; immunohistochemistry evaluated SCCA2 expression levels.

- Tissue SCCA2 levels were significantly higher in psoriatic patients compared to controls.
- Dermal SCCA2 expression showed a positive correlation with both psoriasis severity and the density of dermal inflammatory infiltrates.

- SCCA2 may function as a useful biomarker for assessing psoriasis clinical severity and inflammation grade.
