    Background:

    • Meningiomas are tumors arising from the meninges.
    • Hormone receptors, including androgen and progesterone receptors, are implicated in meningioma development and growth.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantify androgen receptor (AR) and progesterone receptor (PR) binding activity in meningiomas.
    • To investigate the relationship between AR and PR binding and potential implications for meningioma therapy.

    Main Methods:

    • Radioligand binding assays using [3H]R 1881 for AR and [3H]R 5020 for PR.
    • Analysis of 54 meningioma samples (intracranial, intraspinal, metastatic).

    Main Results:

    • Androgen receptors detected in 65% (33.4 +/- 5.4 fmol/mg protein) and progesterone receptors in 89% (236 +/- 35 fmol/mg protein) of tumors.
    • Positive correlation (rs = 0.38, p < 0.05) between AR and PR binding activity.
    • Potential androgen regulation of PR via the AR system suggested.

    Conclusions:

    • A significant proportion of meningiomas express both AR and PR.
    • The correlation suggests a potential regulatory pathway involving androgens and progesterone receptors.
