Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Integrative Medicine
  • Clinical Trials

Background:

  • Urinary incontinence is a frequent complication following radical prostatectomy.
  • Acupuncture is a potential treatment for post-prostatectomy incontinence (PPI), but robust evidence is limited.
  • This trial aims to rigorously assess acupuncture's effectiveness for PPI.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy.
  • To differentiate the therapeutic effect of acupuncture from a placebo effect in PPI patients.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 340 participants across 20 hospitals in China.
  • Participants were randomized to receive either acupuncture or sham acupuncture over a 6-week treatment period.
  • The primary outcome was measured by the change in the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Urinary Incontinence Short Form (ICIQ-UI-SF) score at 6 weeks.

Main Results:

  • Primary outcome: Change in ICIQ-UI-SF score at 6 weeks.
  • Secondary outcomes: 1-hour pad test, 72-hour incontinence frequency, EPIC-26, anxiety scales, pad usage, and self-reported outcomes.
  • Safety of acupuncture treatment will also be assessed.

Conclusions:

  • This trial will provide crucial data on the efficacy of acupuncture for post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence.
  • Findings will clarify whether acupuncture provides a genuine therapeutic effect for PPI.
