Summary

School-based dental sealant programs (SBDSPs) face implementation challenges in recruitment, attendance, and workforce capacity. Adaptations help overcome these issues, but systemic improvements are needed for broader success in preventive dental care.

Background:

School-based dental sealant programs (SBDSPs) are effective in improving dental care access and reducing caries.
Limited data exists on population-level implementation processes impacting SBDSP success.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess SBDSP implementation challenges and adaptations.
To identify factors affecting school and client recruitment, client attendance, and workforce capacity.

Main Methods:

Qualitative study involving interviews with 18 program personnel from 5 organizations in Oregon.
Directed content analysis of implementation processes.

Main Results:

Key problems identified in school recruitment (workforce limits, refusals), client recruitment (materials, engagement, consent), client attendance (cooperation, barriers), and workforce capacity (size, turnover).
Organizations successfully adapted to many challenges, though workforce capacity remained an issue.
Systemic issues in communication and pre-implementation planning were also noted.

Conclusions:

Implementation barriers in recruitment, attendance, and workforce capacity can limit SBDSP reach.
Adaptations offer insights for program recommendations.
Addressing systemic issues requires enhanced organizational communication and pre-implementation planning.
