Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

13.3K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Language and Cognition01:27

Language and Cognition

500
Language serves as a bridge between ideas and communication, influencing how individuals perceive and interact with the world. Psychologists have long debated whether language shapes thought or vice versa. This discussion gained grip with Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf in the 1940s, who proposed that language determines thought, a concept known as linguistic determinism. They suggested that the vocabulary and structure of a language influence how its speakers think and perceive reality.

Language Development01:22

Language Development

508
Children master language quickly and with relative ease, supported by both biological predisposition and reinforcement. B. F. Skinner (1957) proposed that language is learned through reinforcement, while Noam Chomsky (1965) argued that language acquisition mechanisms are biologically determined.
The critical period for language acquisition suggests that the ability to acquire language is at its peak early in life. As people age, this proficiency decreases. Language development begins very...

Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

493
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Wechsler's Contribution to Measures of Intelligence01:23

Wechsler's Contribution to Measures of Intelligence

1.7K
David Wechsler, a psychologist who worked with World War I veterans, developed a significant IQ test in 1939 called the Wechsler-Bellevue Intelligence Scale. This test was innovative because it combined several subtests that measured both verbal and nonverbal skills, reflecting Wechsler's belief that intelligence is a global capacity involving purposeful action, rational thinking, and effective interaction with the environment. This test later evolved into the Wechsler Adult Intelligence...

Summary

The Language Use Inventory-Mandarin (LUI-Mandarin) is a reliable and valid tool for assessing early pragmatic language skills in Chinese-speaking children aged 18-47 months. This new version demonstrates developmental sensitivity and discriminative validity for identifying children with autism spectrum disorder.

Area of Science:

  • Linguistics
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Pragmatics, the social use of language, is a key component of language ability.
  • No existing tools assess early pragmatic development in Chinese-speaking children.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Translate the Language Use Inventory (LUI) into Mandarin Chinese.
  • Evaluate the reliability, validity, and developmental sensitivity of the LUI-Mandarin.

Main Methods:

  • Translated the LUI into Mandarin Chinese.
  • Administered the LUI-Mandarin to 177 typically developing (TD) children (aged 18-47 months) and 43 children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
  • Assessed internal consistency, test-retest reliability, construct validity, developmental sensitivity, and discriminant validity.

Main Results:

  • LUI-Mandarin demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.707-0.992) and good to excellent test-retest reliability (0.66-0.95).
  • Factor analysis explained 74.38% of variance, revealing two factors.
  • Scores increased with age, indicating developmental sensitivity. Girls scored higher than boys at younger ages.
  • Children with ASD performed significantly lower than TD children on most LUI-Mandarin scores.

Conclusions:

  • The LUI-Mandarin is the first and only questionnaire in China for assessing pragmatic language skills in toddlers and preschoolers (18-47 months).
  • The LUI-Mandarin is a valid and reliable tool for evaluating pragmatic language in Chinese children.
  • It is suitable for both assessment and guiding intervention for young children's communicative competence.
