The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.

    Background:

    • Anterior open bites and maxillary curve of Spee present complex orthodontic challenges.
    • Combined surgical and orthodontic approaches are often necessary for effective bite correction.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the long-term stability of combined surgical and orthodontic treatment for open-bite correction.
    • To assess relapse rates of open bite and overjet following treatment.

    Main Methods:

    • Thirty patients with anterior open bites underwent segmental upper arch orthodontic preparation.
    • Surgical correction involved multisegment Le Fort I osteotomy and bilateral sagittal osteotomies.
    • A minimum 36-month follow-up was implemented to assess stability.

    Main Results:

    • No statistically significant long-term relapse was observed for open bite or overjet.
    • A statistically significant mean transverse relapse of upper and lower molars occurred.
    • Simultaneous narrowing of upper and lower arch widths maintained posterior occlusion and prevented open-bite recurrence.

    Conclusions:

    • Combined surgical and orthodontic treatment demonstrates long-term stability for three-dimensional occlusal correction, including anterior open bites.
    • Rigid adherence to orthodontic preparation, surgical techniques, and follow-up protocols is crucial for achieving stable open-bite closure.
