Comparing the Survival Analysis of Two or More Groups01:20

Comparing the Survival Analysis of Two or More Groups

335
Survival analysis is a cornerstone of medical research, used to evaluate the time until an event of interest occurs, such as death, disease recurrence, or recovery. Unlike standard statistical methods, survival analysis is particularly adept at handling censored data—instances where the event has not occurred for some participants by the end of the study or remains unobserved. To address these unique challenges, specialized techniques like the Kaplan-Meier estimator, log-rank test, and...

Statistical Methods for Analyzing Epidemiological Data01:25

Statistical Methods for Analyzing Epidemiological Data

592
Epidemiological data primarily involves information on specific populations' occurrence, distribution, and determinants of health and diseases. This data is crucial for understanding disease patterns and impacts, aiding public health decision-making and disease prevention strategies. The analysis of epidemiological data employs various statistical methods to interpret health-related data effectively. Here are some commonly used methods:

Applications of Life Tables01:22

Applications of Life Tables

136
Life tables are versatile across various fields, providing a quantitative basis for analyzing mortality and survival rates. Whether used by demographers, actuaries, epidemiologists, or sociologists, life tables offer valuable insights into the dynamics of life and death, facilitating informed decisions in public health, insurance, conservation, and beyond. Their broad applicability highlights the interconnectedness of demographic data with practical outcomes in everyday life and strategic...

Actuarial Approach01:20

Actuarial Approach

146
The actuarial approach, a statistical method originally developed for life insurance risk assessment, is widely used to calculate survival rates in clinical and population studies. This method accounts for participants lost to follow-up or those who die from causes unrelated to the study, ensuring a more accurate representation of survival probabilities.
Consider the example of a high-risk surgical procedure with significant early-stage mortality. A two-year clinical study is conducted,...

Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

107
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.
Foundations of Community Mental Health Programs
Central to the success of community-based interventions is the...

Healthcare Agencies II

821
There are various healthcare agencies in the United States—some of which are managed by religious institutions and others by different government branches.
Parish nursing is a growing specialty nursing profession that focuses on holistic healthcare, health promotion, and illness prevention. It blends professional nursing practice with a health ministry, focusing on health and healing within the context of a Christian community. Parish nurses serve as health educators, referral sources,...

    Area of Science:

    • Occupational Health
    • Public Health
    • Epidemiology

    Background:

    • Suicide remains a significant public health concern, with varying rates across different demographics and occupations.
    • Identifying high-risk occupational groups is crucial for developing targeted prevention strategies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine suicide rates by occupation in Utah.
    • To examine the hospital history and circumstances of suicide decedents in the Construction and Extraction industry, which showed the highest rates and numbers of suicides.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized data from the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) from 2005-2015 for Utah adults aged 18-65.
    • Calculated sex- and occupation-specific suicide rates.
    • Linked NVDRS data with hospital histories for male decedents in Construction and Extraction (2014-2015).

    Main Results:

    • The Construction and Extraction industry had the highest number and rate of suicides among working-age men in Utah (86.4/100,000).
    • Among male Construction and Extraction decedents, 58% had a recent diagnosis of substance abuse or mental health problems, and 25% tested positive for opioids.
    • Common circumstances included intimate partner problems (48%), criminal issues (26%), unemployment (25%), and death by gunshot (54%).

    Conclusions:

    • Construction and Extraction is a key occupational group for suicide prevention efforts in Utah.
    • Interventions should address substance abuse, mental health, and interpersonal/criminal problems within this industry.
    • No specific occupation group emerged with both high suicide rates and numbers for females in Utah.
