Atomic Nuclei: Magnetic Resonance

The number of nuclear spins aligned in the lower energy state is slightly greater than those in the higher energy state. In the presence of an external magnetic field, as the spins precess at the Larmor frequency, the excess population results in a net magnetization oriented along the z axis. When a pulse or a short burst of radio waves at the Larmor frequency is applied along the x axis, the coupling of frequencies causes resonance and flips the nuclear spins of the excess population from the...

Double Resonance Techniques: Overview

341
Double resonance techniques in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy involve the simultaneous application of two different frequencies or radiofrequency pulses to manipulate and observe two distinct nuclear spins. One important application of double resonance is spin decoupling, which selectively suppresses coupling with one type of nucleus while observing the NMR signal from another nucleus, simplifying the spectrum and enhancing resolution.
Spin decoupling is usually achieved by...

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive medical imaging technique based on a phenomenon of nuclear physics discovered in the 1930s, in which matter exposed to magnetic fields and radio waves was found to emit radio signals. In 1970, a physician and researcher named Raymond Damadian noticed that malignant (cancerous) tissue gave off different signals than normal body tissue. He applied for a patent for the first MRI scanning device in clinical use by the early 1980s. The early MRI...

When protons A and X are coupled, their nuclear spin energy levels are slightly modified. This is because the energy required to excite proton A to a spin state parallel to proton X is slightly different from the energy required for it to become anti-parallel to spin X. Consequently, there are two possible excitation frequencies for A (A1 and A2), depending on the spin state of X, and vice versa. The mutual nature of coupling implies that the difference between frequencies A1 and A2, indicated...

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR): Overview

4.7K
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a phenomenon exhibited by certain nuclei that can absorb characteristic radio frequency radiation under certain conditions. NMR has been extensively applied in molecular spectroscopy and medical diagnostic imaging. In both these applications, the molecule or subject under study is placed in a magnetic field and irradiated with radio frequency energy.
NMR spectroscopy generates a spectrum where the characteristic absorption frequencies of the sample are...

A proton M that is coupled to a proton X results in doublet signals for M. However, NMR-active nuclei can be simultaneously coupled to more than one nonequivalent nucleus. When M is coupled to a second proton A, such as in styrene oxide, each peak in the doublet is split into another doublet.
Splitting diagrams or splitting tree diagrams are routinely used to depict such complex couplings. While drawing splitting diagrams, the splitting with the larger coupling constant is usually applied...

    Area of Science:

    • Electrical Engineering
    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Physics

    Background:

    • Balun circuits are essential for suppressing common-mode currents in Radio Frequency (RF) coil systems used in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS).
    • Common-mode currents degrade coil performance, introduce noise, cause crosstalk, and pose safety risks in imaging.
    • The Lattice balun is widely adopted in MRI due to its small size and integration capabilities, but traditional designs are single-tuned, limiting multi-nuclear applications.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop and validate a dual-tuned Lattice balun design for multi-nuclear MRI and MRS applications.
    • To overcome the limitations of single-tuned Lattice baluns in accommodating multiple RF frequencies required for simultaneous imaging of different nuclei.

    Main Methods:

    • Theoretical analysis was conducted to derive the necessary component values for the dual-tuned Lattice balun.
    • RF circuit simulations were performed to verify the theoretical calculations and guide the practical construction of the balun.
    • A prototype dual-tuned balun was fabricated and bench tested for 7 Tesla (7T) 1H/23Na MRI applications.

    Main Results:

    • The theoretical analysis and subsequent RF simulations confirmed the feasibility of the dual-tuned Lattice balun design.
    • The fabricated dual-tuned balun demonstrated excellent performance at the Larmor frequencies for both 1H and 23Na.
    • The balun achieved insertion loss below 0.15 dB and a common-mode rejection ratio exceeding 17 dB at both operating frequencies.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed dual-tuned Lattice balun is a viable solution for multi-nuclear MRI/MRS, enabling simultaneous imaging of different nuclei.
    • This design offers superior performance compared to single-tuned baluns, with minimal signal loss and effective common-mode current suppression.
    • The dual-tuned balun is a critical advancement for enhancing the capabilities and efficiency of advanced MRI and MRS techniques.
