Area of Science:

  • Healthcare Education
  • Palliative Care
  • Interprofessional Collaboration

Background:

  • Interprofessional collaboration is crucial in palliative care and other healthcare settings.
  • Pallium Canada offers Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative care (LEAP) Core courses to impart essential palliative care skills to primary care providers.
  • These courses are designed for professionals from various disciplines.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the learning experience of participants from different professional backgrounds in the LEAP Core courses.
  • To analyze learner satisfaction and perceived relevance of the palliative care training.

Main Methods:

  • A mixed-methods approach was used, analyzing secondary data from course evaluations.
  • Quantitative data from a 7-item Likert scale survey and qualitative data from 3 open-ended questions were collected.
  • Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics, Kruskal-Wallis tests for quantitative data, and thematic analysis for qualitative data.

Main Results:

  • A high response rate (66%) was achieved from 3045 participants across physicians, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, and other professions.
  • 96% of learners agreed or totally agreed that the course was relevant to their practice.
  • Significant differences in perceived relevance were found between physicians and pharmacists, and physicians and social workers, but not between physicians and nurses or pharmacists and social workers.

Conclusions:

  • Learners from diverse professional backgrounds reported a highly positive learning experience and high relevance of the interprofessional palliative care course.
  • There is a need for ongoing curriculum refinement to address the specific learning requirements of different professional groups.
  • The LEAP Core courses effectively provide foundational palliative care skills, but customization may enhance learning for certain professions.
