Background:

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is the standard surgical treatment for gallstones.
Patients frequently use the internet to find medical information.
Assessing online health information quality is crucial for patient understanding.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the quality and readability of online information for patients undergoing LC.
To compare information from National Health Service (NHS) and non-NHS websites.

Main Methods:

Searched popular search engines for 'laparoscopic cholecystectomy'.
Analyzed the first 50 relevant websites for quality indicators (HONcode, expert review, update frequency).
Assessed readability using the Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) score.

Main Results:

Only 7% of analyzed websites were HONcode-certified.
The average FRE score was 46, indicating poor readability.
NHS websites had significantly better readability (mean FRE 58.31) than non-NHS sites (mean FRE 42.21).
Only 22% of sites were updated in the last year.

Conclusions:

Online information regarding LC is generally of poor quality and readability.
NHS websites provide more readable and higher-quality information for patients.
Improvements in online health content are needed to ensure patient comprehension.
