Personal Protective Equipment01:20

Personal Protective Equipment

1.9K
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is unique clothing or equipment worn by an employee to minimize or prevent exposure to infectious agents. PPE creates a barrier between the employee and the infectious materials. PPE must be readily available in the patient care area. PPE includes gloves, gowns and aprons, masks and respirators, goggles, face shields, shoes, and headcovers:

The sequence of removing or doffing PPE starts with the gloves, as they are the most contaminated. Next is removal of the face shield or goggles, as they would interfere with removing other PPE. Then remove the gown, followed by the mask or respirator. Perform hand hygiene between steps if hands become contaminated and immediately after removing all PPE. Generally, the outside front and sleeves of the isolation gown, the goggles or the mask, the respirator, and the face shield are contaminated.

Bullying

8.5K
A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is...

Types of Reports II: Incident or Occurrence Report

965
An Incident or Occurrence Report in a healthcare setting is a crucial document used to record any unexpected occurrence that may or may not have affected a patient, employee, or visitor. Such reports are critical to improving patient safety and include all details leading up to and including the event.
Purposes:
In the healthcare industry, reports play a crucial role in documenting incidents within an agency. The primary objective of these reports is to ensure patient safety, uphold the...

PPE Use in Healthcare Settings I: Donning

1.3K
Donning PPE must be completed before contact with the patient. This process protects from infectious agents. The sequence and action included in each donning are critical, and the steps must be systematic to avoid exposure to pathogens. The institutional policy also needs to be followed while donning PPE. The pre-donning preparations are gathering equipment, inspecting the PPE equipment for tears, holes, or damage, removing jewelry, removing any garments below the elbows, and tying the hair...

Nurses' Legal Responsibilities II

927
Establishing a secure, collaborative nurse-patient relationship is crucial for delivering high-quality care. This relationship, founded on trust, respect, and honesty, enhances the patient's comfort and willingness to share vital health information. For example, a nurse who listens actively and without judgment provides clear information about health conditions and treatment options and respects patient decisions, which builds a trusting relationship.
Communication between nurses and...

Summary

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) violence inspections reveal that healthcare facilities often have poorly designed violence prevention programs, leading to continued worker complaints and inadequate safety measures.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational health and safety
  • Workplace violence prevention
  • Regulatory compliance

Background:

  • Workplace violence is a significant concern, particularly in healthcare settings.
  • The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) conducts inspections to ensure worker safety.
  • Understanding the effectiveness of OSHA's violence inspections is crucial for improving workplace safety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the nature and outcomes of violence inspections conducted by OSHA.
  • To assess the effectiveness of violence prevention programs in healthcare facilities cited by OSHA.
  • To identify areas for improvement in OSHA's regulatory approach to workplace violence.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of all OSHA inspections involving workplace violence initiated by January 1, 2019.
  • Semi-structured interviews with compliance officers who inspected facilities with General Duty Clause (GDC) citations or Hazard Alert Letters (HALs).

Main Results:

  • OSHA initiated 726 violence inspections by January 1, 2019, with 69.1% in healthcare.
  • In healthcare, 11.1% of inspections resulted in GDC citations and 67.7% in HALs.
  • Facilities with GDC citations scored significantly lower in key domains compared to HAL facilities, and both had poor recordkeeping.

Conclusions:

  • Healthcare facilities frequently have inadequate violence prevention programs, contributing to ongoing worker complaints.
  • OSHA's current inspection and citation system may not be fully effective in compelling comprehensive safety improvements.
  • There is a need for enhanced strategies to ensure robust violence prevention programs in high-risk industries like healthcare.
