Subacute thyroiditis during the COVID-19 pandemic: a prospective study

Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) cases during the COVID-19 pandemic were comparable to pre-pandemic levels. A significant portion of SAT cases were linked to SARS-CoV-2 infection or vaccination, with milder symptoms observed in vaccine-associated cases.

- Vac-SAT group exhibited milder symptoms and easier treatment compared to CoV-SAT and NonCoV-SAT groups.
Conclusions:
- The overall incidence of SAT remained similar during the pandemic compared to pre-pandemic periods.
- A notable proportion of SAT cases were associated with SARS-CoV-2 exposure (infection or vaccination).
- COVID-19 was the initial presentation of SAT in three patients; vaccine-related SAT cases were milder and required less corticosteroid treatment.
