Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Background:

The full Pain Coping Questionnaire (PCQ) is validated for assessing child pain coping but may be too lengthy for clinical use.
A shorter, feasible measure is needed to assess coping in pediatric chronic pain populations.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate a short-form version of the Pain Coping Questionnaire (PCQ-SF).
To establish the reliability and validity of the PCQ-SF for screening child pain coping.
To provide a brief assessment tool for clinical settings.

Main Methods:

Developed a short-form (PCQ-SF) using confirmatory factor analysis on existing PCQ data (N=1225).
Obtained expert ratings on item content and clarity from researchers and clinicians (n=12).
Validated the 16-item PCQ-SF in a pediatric sample with chronic pain (65 dyads; n=128).

Main Results:

The PCQ-SF demonstrated acceptable preliminary reliability and validity.
Statistical and expert analyses support the 16-item PCQ-SF as a viable alternative to the full measure.
The short-form effectively captures key aspects of pain coping.

Conclusions:

The PCQ-SF provides a compact and efficient method for assessing pediatric pain coping.
Clinicians in busy settings can use the PCQ-SF to quickly identify children's coping strengths and weaknesses.
Further research with diverse samples is recommended to confirm clinical utility.
