Background:

  • Nasolabial sulcus rejuvenation is increasingly popular among Asian populations.
  • Current treatments for nasolabial sulcus rejuvenation using synthetic or autografts are not ideal.
  • Dermal grafts present a novel approach for paranasal augmentation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the operative procedure for paranasal augmentation using dermal grafts.
  • To evaluate the clinical outcomes and graft behavior after paranasal augmentation.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of dermal grafts for midface rejuvenation.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study of 56 patients undergoing paranasal augmentation from March 2015 to August 2019.
  • Dermal grafts harvested from the buttock were folded and inserted into a supraperiosteal pocket via a gingivobuccal incision.
  • Ultrasonographic evaluation was used to measure graft thickness at multiple postoperative time points.

Main Results:

  • No major complications such as foreign body sensation or graft extrusion were reported.
  • The average dermal graft thickness decreased from 10.31 mm at 1 month to 5.17 mm at 18 months post-surgery.
  • Average graft absorption rates were 38.72% at 6 months, 49.36% at 12 months, and 49.92% at 18 months.

Conclusions:

  • Paranasal augmentation with folded dermal grafts provides durable and aesthetically pleasing midface rejuvenation.
  • The biocompatibility of dermal grafts leads to a low complication rate compared to artificial implants.
  • This technique is a viable option for patients seeking midface aesthetic improvement.
